Guat's up?

GUATEMALA

Caitlin and I were privileged to participate in a humanitarian trip to a little town outside of Antigua, Guatemala in a association with a school called Kairos. The school opened in 2009 with the goal to educate and feed local kids that don't have many options for education (or food for that matter). They currently have about 60 students, and we were lucky enough to meet a few that came by to help us work each day. It was an amazing experience and a good reminder of how blessed we are. Our 'struggles' seem quite trivial juxtaposed next to kids who walk 3-4 miles one way to school each day and may not get a good meal when school is not in session.

We helped to build a second story on the school which will house a couple of classrooms, a kitchen, a small library, and showers. Most of the kids don't have running water in their houses, so this way they can at least get a clean shower when they go to school. We spent a lot of time hauling and mixing cement, building window frames, and playing with the kids that came by to help every day. In the evenings, we went out for delicious Guatemalan food in Antigua and had a blast with our group. We love traveling, especially to new countries. It was such a great experience to see a new place and give back while we were there. Great way to travel.
